This is a multidimensional study of the local communities of Chicago as they have changed - and persisted - since they were initially studied by Robert Park, Ernest Burgess, and their students almost fifty years ago.
The most significant part of the work is its examination of symbolic culture. The author discusses how people perceive, evaluate, and form attachments to their communities and indicates that these processes vary according to class, race, family status, age, length of residence, and even such factores as the location of the stores. |
